Horse Shoe Ranch, as a working cattle ranch, has been in existence since 1962, founded by S. J. McKenna.  We have raised and sold registered Polled Hereford and Angus cattle.  From 1986 through 1988, we operated the West Fork Stables, a horseback riding stable on the property.  At that time, we had a herd of more than 25 horses and conducted trail rides and private breakfast rides for families and other groups.  Currently, we are a working hay farm.

Now, almost 20 years later, we want to continue to share with families the beauty of the land and the river.  Our camp sites are set up so as not to disturb the natural lay of the land.  The West Fork of the Black river allows families to enjoy the slower and shallower water, where young and old can swim, fish and catch tadpoles and crayfish.  There are many recreational activities offered in the area, including hiking, canoeing, caving and day trips to Johnson's Shut Ins, Elephant Rocks, Taum Sauk Mountain and other spectacular natural wonders.

We are now 4th generation McKennas to live and work on the land.
